Renovation a bathroom for amazing accessibility

Home renovations are only one of my favorite activities. Before Jason was born, we did a major renovation but had some issues with our contractor. In the end, we gained more space, but it was a headache to accomplish that.

Our bathroom recently has had some issues that required attention. We found the mold. But not only that, I needed more space. During our first renovation, I wanted a lower sink to use it. Remember that I am on the floor at home because I’m much more independent. The sink seemed like a great idea, but it limited space in the bathroom, and I’d often need to change in the hallway, which could be better. Accessibility and independence were my main concerns for the bathroom.

We decided to remodel the bathroom. I wanted a zero-entry bathroom and removed the lower sink. Thanks to Facebook and recommendations, we found someone that gave us a reasonable price. The first time frame was three days which was unrealistic, so in my head, I added two more days to be more practical.

Jeff and I picked out the materials with the person doing the work. We went with gray and white color. A few days later, the renovation began. Keep in mind that we only have one bathroom. Everyone had to be patient and creative. Luckily, we are also members of the YMCA, so that helped with showering.

Long story short, the renovation stretched out longer than three days. It lasted about three weeks. My children were patient, understanding, and flexible. They were way more relaxed than I’d been, primarily as a teenage girl. The more prolonged renovation happened not because they weren’t working but because things came up unexpectedly, and they also had day jobs.

The person we hired also wanted to ensure he did everything right. He said being slow is okay if the job is done right. I appreciate that. My attendant took me to the YMCA to shower. They had a big one with zero entry that I could use.

Needless to say, after the bathroom was completed, we were thrilled. I love being able to change in the bathroom. I also don’t have a hump to climb over to shower. The water pressure is so much better. We love it. Accessibility and independence are things to consider in a renovation. We did a good job.
