Parenting is a hot topic when it comes to rights of people who have disabilities. I  am frequently asked if someone with cerebral palsy can have a baby. The answer is yes! I have athetoid spastic cerebral palsy throughout my whole body. I’ve had two healthy babies after two healthy, normal pregnancies. I love my parenting job for life.

Cerebral Palsy is a neurological disability, and it has no limitations on your reproductive system. Getting around and managing your pregnancy might challenge you.  Feel free to accomplish if you choose l

After you discover that you’re pregnant, finding an obstetrician is sometimes difficult. For my first child, it took me time to find an obstetrician that would help me. You can start the search before you’re pregnant.  I finally found someone I like, and the process went faster with my second child.

Both of my babies were c section, and I was awake.  I decided not to nurse because it would be very difficult.  Formula is just fine for a baby. Being a mother who has cerebral palsy has challenges, but it’s the best experience I ever had. My kids are bright, caring, funny and kind.

People will frequently assume that I had my children to help me. No. My kids have as much normal of a life as they possibly can. They go to school, have friends, have chores, play, read etc.  Occasionally, they help me but it’s really no different than anyone helping around the house.

Others might tell you that having a baby is too hard or will never work. However, if you put your mind to it, anything is possible. Have a plan, love, teach, nurture and definitely use all your patience.  You probably cannot do everything that you’d like for your child but always allow for help.  Your children know you do your best.  You love them, guide them and make sure that they are safe and healthy.
