Last Sunday I had the bittersweet honor of taking Laura to Lycoming, a small yet picturesque college nestled in the heart of Pennsylvania. Many colleges have acceptance day for incoming students. So, we loaded up the van and were on an almost 3 hour drive on a rainy foggy morning. Luckily, I had a friend who could come and get me dressed to help us get on the road quicker. I am grateful for all of my friends who are willing to help me get ready.
Laura earned an academic scholarship to assist paying for her college. Laura has worked very hard for her grades since Kindergarten so all of her hard work paid off to a scholarship. I never heard of Lycoming College, but she felt happy about her acceptance. Lycoming College is a place brimming with charm—historic brick buildings, sprawling green lawns, and the kind of vibrancy that only a college campus can exude.
The drive there was a mix of anticipation and reflection. Due to some unusual circumstances, Laura hasn’t been at home and our relationship has been a bit touchy. In recent months, our bond has been stronger so I felt excited (and a little nervous,) to be with her for the whole day.
As the miles rolled by, we chatted about everything from her packing checklist to the adventure awaiting her. We sang songs that my son made from his playlist. We laughed and noticed how windy the roads were. The ride is scenic, but it might not be too fun in the winter months. Laura expressed her nervousness and excitement. She wanted to make a good impression. I happily reminded her how remarkable she is and it would be difficult to make a bad impression.
When we arrived, Lycoming greeted us with open arms. The campus was much smaller than I thought it would be, but I think that would be great for Laura The campus was alive with energy as other families and students buzzed with nervous excitement. We found the gym to sign in and everyone seemed to be welcoming. Per usual, I was the only parent who uses a wheelchair. I checked with Laura a few times, even though I knew her mind was made up, that she wanted to attend Lycoming before I placed the deposit. She said yes.
After I paid the deposit, they gave Laura s balloon and told her to go to the photo wall. They took a picture of Laura popping the balloon as she made her college choice official. I felt happy for her but sad because I know that she hates being the center of attention. She did it though with a smile on her beautiful face.
We were able to join a tour with a Lycoming senior. The tour guide apologized that they weren’t more accessible, but I reassured him that I knew it was an old campus and they did as well as they could. Besides, I’m not the one attending, Laura is. We walked around campus, I couldn’t help but notice the mix of old and new. Lycoming’s history was evident in its architecture, but its spirit was youthful and forward-thinking. The faculty and staff we met were warm, and it was clear that this was more than a school—it was a community. I knew it had to be gorgeous in the fall and spring when the colors come to life. I could genuinely see Laura enjoying college here and that made me feel happy.
We also heard speakers and happily Laura made a friend plus excited to learn about all of the wilderness activities that awaited her. The dorms were typical and she felt disappointed that they didn’t have air conditioning. We will buy her a fan. Her dad bought her a Lycoming sweatshirt, I bought her a tshirt and we officially bought Lycoming parents tshirts. I still don’t feel old enough for that yet, but here I am.
Leaving this time was easy because we knew we were taking Laura with us. However, in August, I’m sure that I will be a crying mess. Lycoming is the perfect backdrop for Laura to spread her wings, to find her passions, and to embrace the incredible journey ahead.
Here’s to Laura and Lycoming—a partnership bound to flourish.
