    Batman in a wheelchair

In 2016, the Phoenixville YMCA held its very first All Ability Halloween or Accessible Halloween event! Accessible Halloween allows children with disabilities to go trick or treating without barriers. I helped organize the event from the first day. I had first learned of the idea when I played in the power chair hockey tournament in July 2016. I met a new friend, and she told me all about the successful event in Michigan.  I remember being young and couldn’t fully participate in Trick or Treating due to accessibility issues.

My local YMCA was very happy to help with this event. I wanted an accessible area for anyone who has a disability.  I wanted the event to be free and family oriented. We had crafts, games, and volunteers to hand out candy to the children.  It was an enormous success.

This year we are having music, crafts, games and raffles.  We are still in need of volunteers to pass out candy to the children and open to any donations for the event. Children and adults who have disabilities are invited to the event on October 28. We are also striving to make it sensory friendly with no ultra scary costumes.

If you would like to join or help at our event, please email me at jdm19460@gmail.com

The Phoenixville YMCA is having Accessible Halloween for children who have any disability to make it easier for them to go trick or treating. Free and you do not have to be a member to come. The date is October 28 at 5pm.

    We are looking for
    – business to decorate a table to hand out candy to kids
    – children, teens and adults with disabilities to attend any age
    – volunteers to pass out candy
    – volunteers for help with set up, games, crafts, tear down
    – candy donations

Please email me jdm19460@gmail.com for further information or call the Phoenixville YMCA and ask for Jessica Vogt.

    Sincerely,
    Jessica Grono
