Graduation day is always a milestone filled with emotions, and Laura’s special day was nothing short of memorable. Many parents struggle with emotions at graduation time. I know that I have been dreading it since Laura was in Kindergarten. All of the school years seem to fly by but seem so slow in the moment. I always wondered how parents survive this monumental occasion. I have learned how now – we just go with the flow. Allow yourself to feel but keep in the moment. I know easier said than done, but I am an emotional person so if I can do it, I believe that anyone can.
As the anticipation built, Laura devoted time to get ready, her excitement palpable in every detail. One of the standout moments was seeing her graduation cap, meticulously decorated—a reflection of her vibrant personality and the hard work that had led to this day. She pasted pictures on her cap of family, friends and her boyfriend. I felt honored to be on her cap. Laura is an amazing young woman and to see her succeed in all of her dreams.
On the day of graduation, she had practice and I worked until 11. We let Jason stay home from school so he could be apart of the celebration. Before the ceremony, we shared a delightful lunch at Applebee’s, savoring both the food and the significance of the day. It was the perfect way to relax and celebrate Laura’s achievements before the formal festivities began. We had a great time laughing and talking. I soaked in all of the laughter and conversation.
However, Mother Nature had her own plans, and rain decided to make an untimely appearance. It rained almost the entire week and there was a threat of rain that day. Due to the weather, ticket limitations meant that only three guests could attend the ceremony in person. Jason decided to stay home and watch it on TV. Jeff invited friends and family to come watch the ceremony on our television. Luckily, the graduation was broadcast live.
After Laura changed into her dress and graduation attire, I shed my first tears. She looked so grown up. Jeff and I got ready too. We walked over after Laura went over I found myself sitting separate from Jeff and my dad due to sitting arrangements. I was surrounded by other guests, each lost in their own world of pride and anticipation. But any feelings of solitude melted away when Laura passed by and, with a radiant smile, said, “I love you.” That simple, heartfelt moment became the highlight of the day. Tears sprung to my eyes but I didn’t lose it altogether. I felt excited, proud and hopeful that the little girl I sent to kindergarten was the same young woman today.
After the ceremony, the celebration continued with an impromptu viewing party. Laughter, stories, and joyful reflections filled the room, making it an unforgettable gathering. It wasn’t just about the ceremony itself but the shared moments—the decorated cap, the heartfelt words, and the spontaneous celebration—that made Laura’s graduation a day etched in our hearts forever.
