World Cancer Day, observed on February 4th, is a global initiative to raise awareness about cancer, encourage prevention, and support those affected by the disease. This important day serves as a reminder that together, we can make a difference in the fight against cancer. Here’s a closer look at World Cancer Day and how you can get involved:
In 2016, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I believed that no way could I get cancer and have cerebral palsy. It just didn’t seem fair. However, the truth is that cancer spares no one. I was a mom of two young children. Luckily, my doctor kept pursuing and I have had numerous mammograms, ultrasounds and then a lumpectomy, and finally a mastectomy. Regardless of any pre-existing conditions or disabilities, please get screened for cancer. Early detection is key to survival rates increasing.
The Significance of World Cancer Day
World Cancer Day was established by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in 2000. The goal is to reduce the global cancer burden, improve cancer awareness, and advocate for access to quality care for all. Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and World Cancer Day aims to inspire action and mobilize communities to work towards a cancer-free world. I don’t know if it’s realistic to have a cancer-free world. However, we can certainly try and work towards a cancer-free world and lifestyle.
Theme and Campaign
Each year, World Cancer Day has a specific theme that guides the campaign and activities. The theme for the current year is “Close the Care Gap,” which focuses on addressing disparities in cancer care and ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need for prevention, treatment, and support. The campaign encourages individuals, organizations, and governments to take collective action to reduce inequities and improve cancer outcomes. I think a focus should be on the community with disabilities. We see overlooked in the medical world. We need to branch out to those who have disabilities.
Raising Awareness
One of the key objectives of World Cancer Day is to raise awareness about cancer and its impact on individuals and communities. By educating people about cancer risk factors, early detection, and prevention, we can reduce the incidence of cancer and improve survival rates. Common risk factors include tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and exposure to environmental carcinogens. Sometimes cancer just happens despite whatever you do. We can try to eat right, exercise and be aware of what we put into our bodies. Try is the key word.
Supporting Those Affected
World Cancer Day is also a time to show support for those affected by cancer, including patients, survivors, and their families. Sharing stories, offering emotional support, and participating in awareness campaigns can help reduce the stigma associated with cancer and provide hope and encouragement to those who are fighting the disease. Support meant everything to me when going through cancer. I know family and friends who have died from cancer. Be there and never forget those in need. Make a meal, deliver groceries, help clean and run errands – just show up to work because no one likes to ask for help.
