Cerebral palsy awareness month is in March! March 25th is cerebral palsy awareness day. I’m so happy we call it cerebral palsy awareness instead of pride. Pride is considered a seven deadly sin, so I appreciate that we call it awareness. Check out this cerebral palsy awareness T-shirt from Amazon. It’s super cute!

Quick cerebral palsy facts

CP is not contagious, a sickness, or a disease. Cerebral palsy is a physical disability that happens when the brain is injured, the RH factor between mother and unborn baby, or a lack of oxygen.

CP doesn’t mean a life of suffering. Of course, challenges come, and adaptations are necessary, but most people with cerebral palsy live fun, fulfilling, and successful lives. Only some people with cerebral palsy have intellectual disabilities – most do not. So it’s better to be safe not to assume anyone has an intellectual disability.

Everyone has cerebral palsy differently. Commonalities occur in people with different types of cerebral palsy, but it’s rare to find two people with the same symptoms. The differences depend on where, when, and how long the brain experienced damage.

Cerebral palsy doesn’t worsen in the time, but muscles wear out faster than someone without cerebral palsy. I learned I have more control over some of my muscles than I did when I was younger. However, arthritis and pain aren’t uncommon at an earlier age. Therapy, adaptations, and medications can help with these pains.

Tips and Suggestions

Even though our country is trying to be more inclusive, people with cerebral palsy still need to be included. I have many friends and acquaintances, but many don’t invite me to Uplaces or include me in social events or visits. I wonder why unless feared of offending with questions about how to help or feel uncomfortable being with someone different. So I challenge you to invite a friend with cerebral palsy to do something with you. Feel free to ask questions. Even though there might be a little more work involved, imagine the fun you’ll have with your friend who has cerebral palsy.

Employ people with cerebral palsy. Please ensure they are the best candidate, but don’t let cerebral palsy stop you from saying yes. People who have cerebral palsy know how to make things work at the job. Ask questions and be open-minded to new ways. For example, at my work, most people use their laptops, but I do everything on my iPhone. I do the same work as everyone else, and I do the work on a different use of technology.

Relationships, marriage, and children are possible with cerebral palsy. I have had relationships and have now been married for 13 years. I have two children. Of course, challenges exist, but so do solutions. You can do hard things, and people should support you in helping you achieve these goals.

Remember to wear green!
