Friends are the best people around. They are there for you when you need them the most. Friendship is the best thing on Earth. You get to support someone who needs help and have fun with. There is nothing like laughing and having fun with friends. Or offering your hand in support to someone warms your heart. Finding one good friend is really better than having many fake ones.
Having a disability does make friendship difficult. When you can’t drive and do things physically for yourself, people tend to back away. They like you, but usually only on their terms. I used to feel down when I rarely receive a text or a call about doing something or being invited. But, as I age, I do still feel sad, but I also appreciate the friendships that I do have and lasted through the years.
Today I felt pleasantly surprised to receive a package in the mail. My best friend, Megan, lives 6 hours away but I can count on her to be there for me. She surprised me with a very nice ornament about being a teacher. I recently accepted a substitute teaching job, and she knows how important it is to me to be teaching. The ornament bought tears to my eyes of happiness.
It’s too bad that we don’t live closer. We met in college in the year 1994. When we graduated, unfortunately, we were separated by 6 hours of travel. We both have disabilities so driving and traveling independently isn’t possible. Luckily, we have seen each other since, but just not as often as we would like.
With this blog today, I challenge you to reach out to a friend. The smallest gesture, call or text goes longer than you might think. Invite someone over or to do something with. Remember your friends because we all need someone to cherish!
