Laura Earned Her First Pet Hamster

Laura, my daughter, has been asking for a pet of her own.  We have dogs and cats, but she wanted an animal of all to herself.  I hesitated because I wanted to be sure that she had enough maturity and responsibility.  In March, she turned eleven and a half and I felt she had what it takes to care for her pet.

In many previous conversations, we discussed what kind of pet would be good for Laura to get.  I, of course, wanted her to have a beta fish since they’re easy to take care of. She didn’t want that. She wanted a turtle but needed way too much maintenance. So, we settled on a hamster!

Allowing her to own a hamster was pretty much a last minute decision. It’s difficult to explain, but all of the sudden I had the feeling of that it’s time. I surprised her that morning by telling her we were going to the pet store! She smiled brightly.

My attendant drove us there since my husband had to work on that Saturday. Both children acted excited, but Jason knew that it was for Laura to get a pet. I felt so proud that he didn’t complain once or ask for his own pet. He watched and supported his sister.

After trying again to convince Laura to pick a beta fish, I decided she could take care of a hamster. Again, the joy in her eyes resembled fireworks.  The first one she picked was way too fast. She decided she couldn’t handle that one.  The next one was an adorable little girl who was definitely more her pace! She decided that was it. She named her Hazlenut.

We picked out a cage and all the other supplies that a hamster needs.  She told me it was the best day ever.  Once home, Laura set everything up nearly by herself.  Hazelnut fit right in place.

Laura has been extremely good with her responsibility. She cleans the cage once a week herself without any complaints. I’m happy that I made the right decision.
